## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 09/22/07 THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OPERATED HIS EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT KOLB, MK II AIRCRAFT, REGISTRATION NUMBER N43046 FROM WESTWIND AIRPARK, A PRIVATE STRIP IN NIOTA, TN. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TOOK OFF AND FLEW APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE AND CRASHED IN A CORN FIELD. THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WHEN IT IMPACTED THE GROUND. THE PROPELLER BLADES SHOWED NO GROUND STRIKE MARKS, AND SUFFERED LITTLE DAMAGE, NEITHER DID THE ENGINE. ABOUT A QUART TO A HALF GALLON OF FUEL REMAINED IN ONE OF THE TWO FIVE GALLON FUEL TANKS WITH A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL IN THE AREA. THE BALLISTIC PARACHUTE WAS DEPLOYED BUT DID NOT OPEN. THE OPERATOR WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD ON SCENE. OPERATOR DID NOT HOLD A PILOT'S OR MEDICAL CERTIFICATE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL07LA129](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL07LA129), Sep 22, 2007: Kolb MK II (N43046), Sweetwater, TN, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane during climb.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
