## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2007, AT APPROXIMATELY 1340 LOCAL TIME, AN AMERICAN AIRLINES MD-82 EXPERIENCED AN IN-FLIGHT FIRE IN THE NO.1 ENGINE SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF FROM STL ENROUTE TO ORD. THE CREW DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND SECURED THE ENGINE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO RETURN TO STL. ON FINAL, THE CREW NOTICED THAT THEY HAD NO INDICATION THAT THE NOSE GEAR WAS DOWN, WHICH THE TOWER CONFIRMED. THE CREW PERFORMED A SINGLE-ENGINE GO-AROUND, DID AN EMERGENCY GEAR EXTENSION AND LANDED AT STL WITHOUT INCIDENT.
