## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ STATED THAT HE OPERATED HIS AIRCRAFT OVER A RIDGE LINE INTO A NARROW VALLEY. AS HE DESCENDED INTO THE VALLEY TO CHECK FOR LIVESTOCK AND FENCE CONDITIONS, HE ENCOUNTERED GUSTY, QUARTERING TAILWINDS WITH A SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR EFFECTIVENESS. SINCE HE WAS APPROACHING LOW GROUND WITH LITTLE OR NO ROOM TO MANEUVER, THE AIRCRAFT SEEMED TO SETTLE WITH POWER AND STRUCK THE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN07LA167](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN07LA167), Sep 29, 2007: Robinson R-22 Beta (N74557), Silver City, NM, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain control of the helicopter resulting in his settling with power and subsequent impact with terrain. A factor contributing to the accident was the trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
