## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON FINAL APPROACH TO RUNWAY 30 AT FRESNO CHANDLER AIRPORT WHEN IT HIT A TREE FOLLOWED BY A POWER POLE APPROXIMATELY 400' SHORT OF THE RUNWAY SLIGHTLY LEFT OF CENTERLINE. VFR/NIGHT TIME CONDITIONS PREVAILED (NO ADVERSE WINDS REPORTED). THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND AND WAS FOUND WITH THE RIGHT WING BENT AFT, LANDING GEAR SHEARED OFF, AND THE PROPELLER DETACHED. THE AIRCRAFT HAD ADEQUATE FUEL IN BOTH WINGS AND, OTHER THAN AN INOP. LANDING LIGHT, THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL PROBLEMS FOUND. THE PILOT, WHO SUFFERED A HEAD INJURY, REMEMBERED MAKING A NORMAL APPROACH BUT STATED HE FELT A LITTLE "LIGHT HEADED" DURING THE SHORT FLIGHT PRIOR TO LANDING. HE WAS UNABLE TO REMEMBER THE ACCIDENT ITSELF. A CFI IN THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT OBSERVED THE RUNWAY LIGHTS WHILE ON DOWNWIND, BUT DID NOT RECALL SEEING THE VASI. THE CFI RECALLED CHALLENGING THE PILOT TO LAND ON THE CENTERLINE AND THE PILOT ACCEPTING. THE CFI RECALLED TWO IMPACTS AND HITTING THE GROUND. A STUDENT PILOT IN THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT RECALLS SEEING RUNWAY LIGHTS ON DOWNWIND/BASE BUT NOT ON FINAL APPROACH. POST ACCIDENT CALCULATIONS INDICATE THE AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATING UNDER ITS GROSS WEIGHT AND AFT CENTER OF GRAVITY LIMITS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX08CA020](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX08CA020), Oct 26, 2007: Piper PA-28-140 (N6791J), Fresno, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain the proper glide path to clear objects during approach for landing.

## Other reports on N6791J (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19840720055079I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19840720055079I), Jul 20, 1984: Piper PA28140 (N6791J), Manitowoc, WI, Minor damage. Aircraft bounced and porpoised during landing. Prop and nose wheel were bent.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
