## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT DEPARTED SAN CARLOS, CA AT APPROXIMATELY 1100 HOURS WITH A DESTINATION OF HAYWARD, CA. HOWEVER, AT ABOUT 1115 HOURS THE PILOT STATED THE ENGINE QUIT. HE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE BUT IT FAILED TO START, THEREFORE, HE DECIDED TO PUT THE AIRCRAFT DOWN IN THE BAY. HE LANDED SAFELY IN THE BAY SOUTH OF THE SAN MATEO, CA BRIDGE. AN INSPECTION WAS CONDUCTED BY THE CONTINENTAL ENGINE REPRESENTATIVE AND THE FAA TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE ENGINE FAILURE. THE CONTINENTAL ENGINE REPRESENTATIVE SUGGESTED TRYING TO START THE ENGINE. THEREFORE, BOTH MAGNETOS HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO EXTENSIVE WATER DAMAGE. THE SPARK PLUGS WERE REMOVED, INSPECTED AND REPLACED. THE FUEL FILTER WAS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION AND FOUND TO BE CONTAMINATED. THE ENGINE WAS TIMED AND SERVICED WITH APPROXIMATELY ONE AND A HALF QUARTS OF OIL. THE ELECTRICAL WIRING THROUGHOUT THE AIRCRAFT WAS BADLY WATER DAMAGED, THEREFORE, THE ENGINE HAD TO BE JUMP WIRED TO START. THE ENGINE RAN FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS AND QUIT DUE TO OIL LEAKAGE. THE CARBURETOR AND JTI INDICATOR ARE BEING SENT TO NTSB AS EXHIBITS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA08LA012](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA08LA012), Oct 27, 2007: Beech F35 (N5050B), San Carlos, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power for undetermined reasons. Contributing to the accident was the lack of suitable terrain for a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
