## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT PILOT SELECTED THE "OFF" POSITION ON THE FUEL SELECTOR INSTEAD OF THE "RIGHT" POSITION. STUDENT PULLED THE POWER BACK AND THOUGHT THE ENGINE WAS IDLING ON DESCENT TO THE AIRPORT WHILE IT WAS ACTUALLY WIND MILLING. WHEN POWER WAS APPLIED UPON APPROACH IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WASN'T ANY. FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TOOK CONTROL AND LANDED THE AIRCRAFT ON WILLOW STREET JUST SHORT OF THE HYANNIS AIRPORT. NO ONE HAD LOOKED AT THE INSTRUMENTS FROM THE TIME THE FUEL WAS SELECTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA08CA017](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA08CA017), Nov 14, 2007: Piper PA-28-140 (N9610W), Hyannis, MA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's mismanagement of the fuel supply and the flight instructor's inadequate supervision.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
