## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT PILOT AND HER INSTRUCTOR SPENT ONE HOUR IN TRAFFIC PATTERN TO PREPARE FOR SECOND SUPERVISED SOLO. WINDS WERE LIGHT AT THE CONCLUSION OF DUAL INSTRUCTION, AND INSTRUCTOR RELEASED STUDENT FOR SOLO PRACTICE OF TAKEOFFS AND FULL-STOP LANDINGS. AFTER THE STUDENT'S TAKEOFF, SHE NOTICED THAT THE WINDS HAD BEGUN TO STRENGTHEN (NOW REPORTED AS 020 AT 10 KTS, GUSTING TO 18), AND SHE MADE TWO UNSUCCESSFUL PORPOISING TOUCHDOWN ATTEMPTS FOLLOWED BY GO-AROUNDS ON RUNWAY 8. MEANWHILE, HER INSTRUCTOR CALLED THE CONTROL TOWER IN ORDER TO HAVE THEM ADVISE HER TO RETURN TO THE RAMP. ON HER THIRD ATTEMPT TO LAND, THE PORPOISING AT TOUCHDOWN RESULTED IN THE NOSE LANDING GEAR STRUT BREAKING OFF, FOLLOWED BY PROPELLER CONTACT WITH THE RUNWAY AND SUBSEQUENT DEPARTURE OF THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE RUNWAY INTO THE GRASS. FROM INTERVIEWING THE INSTRUCTOR, IT APPEARS THAT HE ADEQUATELY FULFILLED ALL REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES. THE UNFORESEEN AND SUDDEN INCREASE IN WIND OVERCAME THE EXPERIENCE AND SKILL LEVEL OF THE STUDENT PILOT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
