## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT HAD A HARD LANDING WHILE PERFORMING A SHORT FIELD LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT THEN LEFT THE RUNWAY AND STRUCK A TAXIWAY SIGN. A COMBINATION OF THE HARD LANDING AND THE LEFT MAIN GEAR STRIKING THE TAXIWAY SIGN CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. STUDENT ADMITS RESPONSIBILITY, UNDERSTANDING HE SHOULD HAVE PERFORMED A GO-AROUND WHEN HE REALIZED HE WAS NOT GOING TO MAKE HIS INTENDED TOUCHDOWN POINT. BLOCK 3 VS. BLOCKS 36 & 37, DATES ARE CORRECT. A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS OCCURRED, THE SCHOOL'S MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL DISCOVERED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE INSIDE THE FUSELAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX08CA031](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX08CA031), Nov 24, 2007: Diamond Aircraft Industries DA-20-C1 (N4191D), Mesa, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: the student pilot's failure to maintain the proper glide path and misjudged flare, which resulted in a hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
