## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 12/12/2007 AT APPROXIMATELY 1015 LOCAL TIME, AN AERO CANARD AIRCRAFT (N199JW SN:0020), PILOTED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, DEPARTED RUNWAY (RWY) 28 AT THE STATESVILLE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (SVH). ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, THE CANOPY OF THE AIRCRAFT OPENED ON OR NEAR ROTATION AND AT APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL (AGL) THE AIRCRAFT COVER (USED TO PROTECT THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE ELEMENTS WHILE PARKED) DEPARTED THE INTERIOR OF THE AIRCRAFT AND WENT THROUGH THE PROPELLER. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO SLOWLY CLIMB ON A HEADING OF APPROXIMATELY 230 DEGREES FOR APPROXIMATELY 2500 FEET WHERE IT STRUCK A TREE AND IMPACTED THE GROUND. BOTH TIPS OF THE PROPELLER (APPROX 1 FOOT SECTIONS) AND THE SHREDDED AIRCRAFT COVER WERE FOUND NEAR THE RWY 28 3000 FOOT MARKER. THE REST OF THE AIRCRAFT AND PROPELLER WERE FOUND AT THE IMPACT SITE. FIRST RESPONDERS ARRIVED AT THE SCENE WHERE ONE PERSON WAS FOUND DEAD STRAPPED IN THE PILOT'S SEAT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC08LA059](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC08LA059), Dec 12, 2007: Wootton, John Aero Canard (N199JW), Statesville, NC, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: An inadvertent opening of the canopy during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
