## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JANUARY 11, 2008 THE PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ AND SOLE OCCUPANT DEPARTED THE FORT SCOTT, KS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT AT APPROXIMATELY 2030 LOCAL DESTINED TO SALINA, KS. SHORTLY AFTER TAKE-OFF, DURING THE CLIMBOUT SEGMENT OF THE FLIGHT, THE PILOT NOTICED FLAMES COMING OUT FROM THE ENGINE COWLING VENTS. THE PILOT INITIATED ENGINE SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES AND WAS ABLE TO EXECUTE A POWER OFF RETURN LANDING TO THE FORT SCOTT MUNICIPAL AIRPORT. UPON LANDING THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO ROLL OFF THE RUNWAY AND ONTO A TAXIWAY WHERE THE PILOT EGRESSED FROM AIRCRAFT. WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF PERSONNEL ON THE GROUND THE FIRE UNDER ENGINE COWL WAS EXTINGUISHED WITH A HAND HELD FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
