## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE DEPARTED DHN, DOTHAN, ALABAMA, ENROUTE TO 4AL9, LAPINE, ALABAMA AT ABOUT NOON ON JANAURY 12, 2008. HE COULD NOT LOCATE THE FIELD AND THEREFORE DIVERTED TO TOI, TROY, ALABAMA, AND CALLED SOME ACQUAINTANCES AT 4AL9 FOR ASSISTANCE. ON HIS NEXT SORTIE, THE AIRPORT OWNER SAW HIM AND WENT OUT AND RADIOED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS ABEAM THE FIELD. THE AIRMAN INITIATED A LEFT BASE TURN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 22 AND WAS ON SHORT FINAL AT 90 KIAS, WHICH IS MUCH FASTER THAN RECOMMENDED FOR THIS AIRCRAFT, CAUSING HIM TO GROSSLY OVERSHOOT HIS INTENDED LANDING POINT. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN WITH ONLY ABOUT ONE FOURTH OF THE 2,900 FOOT RUNWAY REMAINING AND HE LOCKED THE BRAKES IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP. THE AIRCRAFT SKIDDED, DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE LEFT, CONTINUED BEYOND THE RUNWAY'S END INTO A LINE OF TREES, AND EVENTUALLY CAME TO REST STRADDLING A CREEK BED. THE LEFT WING WAS SHEARED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AT ITS ROOT AND THE RIGHT WING AND FUSELAGE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE AIRMAN SUSTAINED NO INJURIES AND REPORTED THE ACCIDENT TO FSS BY TELEPHONE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
