## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) STUDENT WAS PRACTICING HOVERING IN WEST PRACTICE AREA AT DWH WHEN AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SETTLE. STUDENT APPLIED ABRUPT COLLECTIVE INPUT TO STOP DESCENT AND DUE TO TIGHT GRIP ON THROTTLE GOVERNOR WAS UNABLE TO COMPENSATE AND ROTOR BEGAN TO DECAY. CFI TOOK THE CONTROLS AND APPLIED THROTTLE WITH REDUCTION IN COLLECTIVE. AIRCRAFT CONTACTED GROUND WITH A LEFT DRIFT AND NOSE LOW ATTITUDE. FORWARD LEFT SKID CAUGHT AND FINALLY BROKE OFF, ROLLING MOMENT AND EXCEEDING THE CRITICAL ANGLE CAUSED AIRCRAFT TO EXPERIENCE DYNAMIC ROLLOVER AND AIRCRAFT ENDED UP ON LEFT SIDE. THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT (I.E. WRINKLED TRANSMISSION DECK AND DESTROYED MAIN ROTOR BLADES), AND MINOR INJURIES TO THE PILOT IN COMMMAND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW08CA064](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW08CA064), Feb 8, 2008: Robinson R22 Beta (N2364B), Houston, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's improper use of the collective and the flight instructor's delayed remedial action, which resulted in a dynamic rollover.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
