## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING TAKE-OFF FROM THE PILOT'S PRIVATELY-OWNED AIRSTRIP, THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN FAILURE OF THE RUDDER. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY VEERED TO THE LEFT BETWEEN TWO TELEPHONE POLES AND UNDER THE WIRES. PILOT OPERATED THE AIRCRAFT FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 MINUTES WHILE DUMPING ITS LOAD OF DRY FERTILIZER AND ASCERTAINING LANDING OPTIONS. THE PILOT LANDED THE AIRCRAFT IN A SOFT FIELD APPROXIMATELY 800' WEST OF THE RUNWAY, TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 500', WHERE UPON THE AIRCRAFT NOSED IN AND FLIPPED THE AIRCRAFT OVER INTO AN INVERTED POSITION. INITIAL OBSERVATION REVEALED THAT THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE PROPELLER, LEFT UPPER WING STRUCTURE, AND VERTICAL TAIL, INCLUDING THE RUDDER. INITIAL INVESTIGATION OF POST-CRASH DAMAGE REVEALED THAT THE LOWER PORTION OF THE RUDDER MAIN TUBULAR SPAR SHOWED SIGNS OF HEAVY CORROSION AND SEPARATION FROM THE RUDDER CONTROL ASSEMBLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX08LA083](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX08LA083), Mar 22, 2008: Gulfstream-Schweizer G-164B (N8148K), Genesee, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The in-flight failure of the rudder attachment point due to severe corrosion, which made directional control of the airplane not possible during landing.

## Other reports on N8148K (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19810429020389A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19810429020389A), Apr 29, 1981: Scwzer G164B (N8148K), Coy, AR, Substantial damage. Aircraft flipped inverted during landing on Private strip. Runway was soft, causing gear to sink in.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
