## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APRIL 7, 2008, THE PILOT AND SINGLE OCCUPANT OF N5300L, A PIPER PA-28-180, DEPARTED STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS (KSEP) TO DUMAS, TEXAS (KDUX) VFR. THE PILOT STATED HE WAS CRUISING AT 6500' WHEN, AT APPROXIMATELY 1440 CDT, HE HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. THE PILOT IMMEDIATELY RETARDED THE THROTTLE AND LEANED THE FUEL MIXTURE. THE PILOT REDUCED SPEED AND SHUT OFF THE MAGNETOS AND ESTABLISHED AN AIRSPEED OF 80 MPH BUT THE PROPELLER CONTINUED TO TURN, SHAKING THE AIRCRAFT. HE CONTACTED FORT WORTH CENTER AND DECLARED AN EMERGENCY, LOWERED THE FLAPS, STOPPED THE PROPELLER, AND LANDED IN A WHEAT FIELD. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A BARBED WIRE FENCE UPON LANDING CAUSING A MINOR DENT IN THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LEFT WING AND DAMAGING THE LINKAGE ON THE AILERON TRIM TAB. GROUND SCARS WERE APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET LONG. 44 INCHES OF ONE SIDE OF THE PROPELLER BLADE WAS MISSING. THE ENGINE MOUNTS WERE SHEARED AND THE ENGINE WAS LISTING TO THE LOWER RIGHT. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE COWLING, PASSENGER WINDSCREEN, AND RIVETS WERE PULLED FORWARD OF THE RIGHT SIDE DOOR. THE RIGHT SIDE APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN WARPED JUST AFT OF THE RIGHT DOOR. NO INJURIES SUSTAINED TO PILOT OR PASSENGER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DFW08LA094](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DFW08LA094), Apr 7, 2008: Piper PA-28-180 (N5300L), Paducah, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: Fatigue failure and separation of the propeller during cruise flight. Contributing to the accident was the owner's failure to comply with a long standing Airworthiness Directive.
