## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING TAKE OFF FROM ONT (REPOSITIONING FLIGHT TO SAN), THE ENGINE INDICATION AND CREW WARNING SYSTEM "SMOKE IN THE LAVATORY" MESSAGE ILLUMINATED. THE CREW DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND DIVERTED BACK TO ONT. UPON LANDING, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DISCOVERED NO EVIDENCE OF FIRE OR SMOKE. THE AIR CARRIER'S TIME CONTROL INDEX (INSPECTION TASK CARDS) DO NOT HAVE AN INSPECTION TASK FOR THE LAVATORY SMOKE SENSOR. CORRECTIVE ACTION: I CONTACTED THE PRIMARY MAINTENANCE INSPECTOR TO COORDINATE WITH THE AIR CARRIER, A CHANGE TO THE INSPECTION TASK CARDS TO INCLUDE: CHECKING THE LAVATORY SENSOR FOR DIRT/DUST BUILDUP AND REMOVAL OF THE BUILDUP IF REQUIRED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
