## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON APRIL 19, 2008, A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND INSTRUMENT STUDENT TOOK OFF AT APPROXIMATELY 10:35 AM FROM WILLARD AIRPORT ON AN IFR CLEARANCE. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR STATED ON CLIMB OUT "THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING A LITTLE ROUGH". THE CARBURETOR HEAT WAS APPLIED BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. THEY CONTINUED THE CLIMB AND REACHED 5000 FEET WHEN THEY NOTICED A VACUUM PUMP FAILURE AND A HIGHER THAN NORMAL OIL TEMPERATURE. THEY STARTED TO TURN BACK TO WILLARD AIRPORT WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND THE AIRCRAFT DESCENDED IN AND OUT OF THE CLOUDS AND BROKE OUT AT A 1000 FEET ABOVE GROUND. A DETERMINATION WAS MADE THAT THEY COULD NOT REACH THE AIRPORT AND DECIDED TO LAND IN A SOYBEAN FIELD. THE AIRPLANE TOUCHED DOWN AND ROLLED TO A STOP WITH NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED WITH THIS REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
