## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED MORRIS (C09) ON A PLEASURE FLIGHT. HE HEADED TOWARD CUSHING AIRPORT (068) AT 2,500 FEET MSL. APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF CUSHING, HE HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. HE PERFORMED HIS EMERGENCY CHECKLIST AND MADE A RADIO CALL TO CUSHING AIRPORT. HE PROCEEDED TO THE NORTH SIDE OF THE AIRPORT AND ENTERED A TIGHT PATTERN FOR RUNWAY 36. HE STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT ON THE RUNWAY AND THAT SINCE HIS APPROACH SPEED (103 MPH) WAS FASTER THAN HSI NORMAL APPROACH SPEED (92 MPH), HE DIDN'T THINK HE COULD LAND (THE POH FOR THE RV-6 LISTED BEST GLIDE SPEED AS 80 MPH AND NORMAN APPROACH SPEEDS OF 75-80 MPH. HE APPLIED FULL THROTTLE AND WENT AROUND. ON THE SECOND APPROACH WHILE ABOUT 100 YARDS FROM THE RUNWAY, HE PULLED THE MIXTURE TO IDLE CUTOFF, SHUTOFF THE FUEL AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. HE ENDED UP TOO LOW AND THE STOPPED PROPELLER AND LANDING GEAR IMPACTED THE TOP STRANDS OF BARBED WIRE ON THE FENCE AT THE SOUTH END OF RUNWAY 36.
