## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT LANDED A SKI-EQUIPPED DHC-3 OTTER IN 4 FEET OF NEW SNOW ON A GLACIER LANDING STRIP. DURING LEFT HAND TAXIING TURN THE TAIL SKI DROPPED INTO THE DEEP TRACK CREATED BY THE RIGHT MAIN SKI. TAIL SKI WAS FORCED SIDEWAYS AND EXCEEDED DESIGN LIMITS OF BUNGEE STRAP HOLDING IT. BUNGEE BROKE AND SKI DUG INTO SNOW WHICH THEN FORCED THE OTHER END OF THE SKI INTO THE FUSELAGE. SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE FUSELAGE AND THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR SKIES AND CALM WINDS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC08CA065](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC08CA065), Apr 28, 2008: de Havilland DHC-3 (N565TA), Talkeetna, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's selection of an unsuitable landing site, which resulted in an overload failure of the tail ski assembly during the landing roll.

## Other reports on N565TA (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 20091207857339I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20091207857339I), Dec 7, 2009: Dehavilland DHC-3 (N565TA), Talkeetna, AK, No damage. While taxiing for take-off pilot hit and bent taxiway light stanchion with ski. No damage to aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
