## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR WITH A 9-10 KNOT CROSSWIND COMPONENT FROM THE NORTH. RUNWAY CONDITIONS WERE REPORTED GOOD WITH SOFT EDGES BY THE PILOT AND AIRPORT MANAGER. ON FINAL FOR RUNWAY 23, THE PILOT APPLIED LEFT RUDDER AND RIGHT AILERON TO COMPENSATE FOR THE RIGHT CROSSWIND. THE AIRCRAFTS MAIN WHEEL TOUCHED DOWN SLIGHTLY LEFT OF CENTERLINE. WHEN THE NOSE WHEEL TOUCHED DOWN, THE AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY TURNED HARD TO THE LEFT AND DEPARTED THE RUNWAY SURFACE ONTO THE SAFETY AREA JUST OUTSIDE THE RUNWAY LIGHTS. THE PILOT APPLIED FULL RIGHT BRAKE AND FULL RIGHT RUDDER DEFLECTION TO LINE UP WITH CENTERLINE. DESPITE HIS CORRECTION, AND WITH THE NOSE GEAR COCKED FULLY TO THE LEFT, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SKID IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR COLLAPSED, AND THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR BENT BACKWARDS. THE AIRCRAFT ROTATED 90 DEGREES CLOCKWISE TO THE RUNWAY STRIKING THE BOTTOM OF THE LEFT WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC08LA059](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC08LA059), Apr 30, 2008: Cessna 560XL (N590AK), Port Heiden, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flying pilot’s failure to maintain directional control while landing in a crosswind. A factor contributing to the accident was a crosswind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
