## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT HAD LONG DESCENT WITH ENGINE AT IDLE, HE DID NOT CLEAR THE CARBURETOR. ON SHORT FINAL OVER THE WATER, THE PILOT REALIZED HE WAS A LITTLE LOW AND SHORT AS THE RUNWAY WAS ABOUT SIX FEET ABOVE WATER LEVEL, SO HE INCREASED HIS THROTTLE, BUT DID NOT GET THE EXPECTED ENGINE RESPONSE. THE PLANE STRUCK THE LIP OF THE TERRAIN AND COLLAPSED THE NOSE GEAR. THE ENGINE CAUGHT AND THE AIRCRAFT BECAME AIRBORNE, THE PIOT RETARDED THE THROTTLE AND BOUNCED ONCE AGAIN. THIS TIME THE BROKEN NOSE GEAR DUG IN AND THE AIRPLANE ROLLED OVER IT'S OWN NOSE, COMING TO REST ON THE ENGINE COWL, ROLL BAR AND VERTICAL FIN, WITH SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FIN. THE CANOPY WAS BROKEN, BECAUSE OF THE ROLLBAR, THE COCKPIT SPACE REMAINED INTACT, THE PILOT ASSISTED HIS PASSENGER. MINOR CUTS ON BOTH OCCUPANTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX08CA143](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX08CA143), May 17, 2008: Mason RV-9A (N486EM), Pacific City, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate flare and failure to maintain control following a hard landing. Contributing to the accident was a temporary partial loss of power due to carburetor icing conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
