## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MAY 17, 2008 A STUDENT PILOT OPERATING PIPER AIRCRAFT N1601P LANDED ON THE GRASS STRIP AT DELPHI MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (1I9), DELPHI INDIANA (HEADING 180). DURING THE LANDING ROLLOUT, THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A CROSSWIND FROM THE SOUTHWEST. WHILE ON THE GROUND, THE AIRCRAFT DRIFTED TO THE EAST SKIDDING ALONG THE GROUND, UNTIL REACHING THE EDGE OF THE GRASS STRIP. AT THIS POINT, THE WIND LIFTED THE AIRCRAFT CAUSING THE LEFT WINGTIP AND PROPELLER TO CONTACT THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED COMPLETELY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, ENDING UP ON ITS LANDING GEAR AND CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO EACH WING, SECTIONS OF THE FUSELAGE, CABIN ROOF AND FIREWALL. HISTORICAL WEATHER DATA FOR THE LAFAYETTE, INDIANA AREA INDICATE WINDS FROM THE WEST AT 9 MPH/MAX 24 MPH/GUSTING TO 33 MPH. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED AND NO DAMAGE TO AIRPORT PROPERTY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI08CA148](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI08CA148), May 17, 2008: Piper PA-22-135 (N1601P), Delphi, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate compensation for the gusting crosswind during landing rollout. Contributing to the accident was the gusting crosswind condition.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
