## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AN AMATEUR-BUILD LANCAIR 4-P, REGISTRATION NUMBER N241DM, PILOTED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ DEPARTED DENISON, IA ENROUTE TO LOUISVILLE, KY. THE FLIGHT WAS CONDUCTED UNDER INSTRUMENT FLIGHT RULES. THE PILOT RECEIVED A WEATHER BRIEFING FROM LOCHEED MARTIN SERVICES, FORT WORTH HUB AT ABOUT 17:50 GMT (11:50 CDT). THE BRIEFER ADVISED ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF SEVERE WEATHER AND A TORNADO WATCH AREA ALONG HIS FLIGHT PATH. IN THE AREA NORTHEAST OF NEW DOUGLAS, IL THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED AN AREA OF SEVERE WEATHER AND BEGAN TO BREAK UP IN AIR. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE EARTH SOUTH OF NEW DOUGLAS, IL ON LEUSCHER RD BETWEEN ROCKWELL AND WERNLE ROADS. THE INFLIGHT BREAK UP OF THE AIRCRAFT LEFT A TRAIL OF DEBRIS FOR A DISTANCE OF AT LEAST FOUR MILES IN A NORTHEASTERLY DIRECTION FROM THE AIRCRAFT. NEITHER WING OF THE AIRCRAFT NOR THE EMPANNAGE OF THE AIRCRAFT WERE AT THE POINT OF IMPACT. THE RIGHT WING AND RUDDER WERE FOUND ABOUT 4100 FEET NE OF THE AIRPLANE. NO DISCERNABLE PIECE OF THE LEFT WING WAS FOUND EXCEPT AT ABOUT 2/3 OF THE SPAR WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE FUSELAGE. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ FLIGHT HOURS WERE OBTAINED FROM HIS FAA MEDICAL DATABASE AND CURRENT AS OF OCTOBER 2006.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI08LA158](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI08LA158), Jun 6, 2008: Maggs Lancair 4P (N241DM), Alhambra, IL, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's decision to continue the flight into an area of known thunderstorm activity and the in-flight structural failure of the airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
