## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUN 8, 2008, APPROXIMATELY 1730 LOCAL, THE PILOT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT (N199L) EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE APPROXIMATELY 10 MILE SOUTH OF BEND, OR MEAN SEA LEVEL (MSL). THE PIC WAS EN-ROUTE FROM MARYSVILLE, CA (MYV) TO REDMOND, OR (RDM). THE PIC SAID HE NOTICED A LOSS IN OIL PRESSURE CAUSING THE PROPELLER TO OVERSPEED THE ENGINE TO 3560 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE (RMP'S). THE OVER-SPEEDING WAS FOLLOWED BY A LOUD NOISE, HEAVY VIBRATION AND SMOKE FROM THE COWLING AND COCKPIT. THE PIC IMMEDIATELY REDUCED POWER, PULLED THE MIXTURE TO IDLE CUT-OFF AND TURN THE FUEL SELECTOR TO OFF. AFTER LANDING SHORT OF RUNWAY 34 AT BEND AIRPORT (S07) THE MAIN GEAR WAS SHEARED OFF BY A BIRM CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO SKID ON THE MAIN GEAR STRUTS AND TAIL CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER. IF THE BIRM HAD NOT BEEN THERE IT IS POSSIBLE THE AIRPLANE WOULD HAVE LANDED SAFELY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX08LA168](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX08LA168), Jun 9, 2008: Mkii Lancair Legacy 2000 (N199L), Bend, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power due to the fatigue failure of the Number 3 cylinder connecting rod.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
