## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT DEPARTED FROM A HARD SURFACED RUNWAY NEAR SQUIM, WA. HE FLEW SOUTH WITH THE INTENT TO LAND IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER AT RAINIER, OR. UPON IMPACT WITH THE WATER, THE AIRCAFT FLIPPED OVER AND SUBMERGED UP TO THE FLOATS. THE PILOT WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT AND RECEIVED MINOR INJURY. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS REMOVED FROM THE WATER, FLIPPED OVER, AND PLACED BACK ON ITS FLOATS. AN IMMEDIATE INSPECTION OF THE COCKPIT REVEALED THE LANDING GEAR HANDLE WAS IN THE RETRACT POSITION. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE DID NOT RECALL VERIFYING THE ACTUAL GEAR POSITION AND MAY NOT HAVE NOTICED PANEL ADVISORY LIGHTS DUE TO LANDING INTO THE SUN. POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION BY THE NTSB INSPECTOR FOUND THE LANDING GEAR RETRACT SYSTEM HYDRAULIC RESERVOIR EMPTY. FURTHER INSPECTION FOUND FLUID LEAKAGE AT THE TENSION CYLINDER IN THE LEFT FLOAT. THE CYLINDER HAD BEEN REMOVED IN ORDER TO PERFORM A DETAILED INSPECTION. THIS INVESTIGATION IS NOT COMPLETE. AMENDED REPORT POSSIBLE, PENDING INSPECTION OF TENSION CYLINDER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
