## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^PILOT STATED AFTER THE GLIDER WAS RELEASED FROM THE TOW AIRCRAFT HE ENCOUNTERED SEVERE TURBULENCE. HE SLAMMED AGAINST THE CANOPY OF THE AIRCRAFT SHATTERING THE CANOPY. THE TURBULENCE INDUCED A NEGATIVE PITCH ATTITUDE. THE AIRSPEED INDICATOR INDICATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS BEYOND VNE. AT THIS POINT THE PILOT RECOVERED FROM THE TURBULENCE UPSET, AND MADE AN APPROACH INTO A CLEARING. THE AIRCRAFT CONTACTED A TREE BEFORE TOUCH DOWN, LANDED HARD INTO THE GRASS, AND GROUND LOOPED BEFORE IT CAME TO A STOP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC08CA236](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC08CA236), Jun 29, 2008: Glasflugel Standard Libelle (N184W), Front Royal, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: Aircraft control was not maintained during cruise flight. Contributing to the accident was turbulence and inadvertent flight into adverse weather.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
