## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 20, 2008 ABOUT 1730 PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME, A BLANIK L-13 GLIDER, N48029 WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHEN IT IMPACTED THE TERRAIN WHILE TRYING TO LAND AT ARLINGTON AIRPORT (AWO), ARLINGTON WASHINGTON. THE PIC HAD MINOR INJURIES. VISUAL METROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AND NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED FOR THE CONDUCTED FLIGHT UNDER 14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS PART 91. THE PILOT WAS FLYING THE GLIDER AND WAS RETURNING TO LAND WHEN HE REALIZED HE HAD EXTENDED DOWN WIND TOO FAR AND WAS UNABLE TO REACH THE AIRPORT SO HE ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON A SOD FARM BUT HE CLIPPED A TREE WITH R/H WING TIP CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS NOR DID THE PILOT REPORT ANY MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. THE GLIDER SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT HAND WING AND NUMEROUS AREAS OF FUSELAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA08CA163](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA08CA163), Jul 21, 2008: Let Blanik L-13 (N48029), Arlington, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from a tree while making an off-field landing in a glider. Contributing to the accident was the pilot's inadequate compensation for the gusting winds.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
