## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, AS PILOT IN COMMAND OF N4281B, AN ICA BRASOV GLIDER, BECAME DISORIENTED IN RELATION TO HIS DEPARTURE FIELD WHILE ATTEMPTING TO FLY TO A LENTICULAR CLOUD THAT WOULD PROVIDE LIFT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REALIZED HE WAS AT 2000 FEET MSL AND WAS TOO LOW TO RETURN TO THE DEPARTURE FIELD. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ELECTED TO SET UP A BASE LEG TO WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A HAY FIELD, HOWEVER THE FIELD WAS ACTUALLY HIGH CORN RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE GLIDER UPON LANDING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC08CA275](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC08CA275), Aug 10, 2008: I.C.A.-Brasov IS-26B2 (N4281B), Fincastle, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's geographic disorientation, which resulted in an off-airport landing. Contributing to the accident was the pilot's selection of an inadequate landing site.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
