## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT ON PART 135 REVENUE CHARTER FLIGHT ACCEPTED CLEARANCE FROM ATC FOR ILS RWY 31 APPROACH TO SLE AFTER ACKNOWLEDGING RECEIVING 2 WEATHER REPORTS FOR SLE SHOWING VISIBILITY LESS THAN 1/2 MILE. AFTER STARTING APPROACH, SALEM TOWER NOTIFIED PILOT THAT VISIBILITY WAS 1/4 MILE OR LESS WITH FOG, AND HE ASKED TO CONTINUE THE APPROACH. ONCE A COUPLED AUTOPILOT APPROACH WAS STARTED DOWN THE GLIDE SLOPE, HE REPORTED THAT HE LOOKED DOWN AT HIS CHARTS TO FIND MISSED APPROACH PROCEDURES, AND SUDDENLY SAW A GREEN FLASH TO HIS LEFT. THE FRONT PASSENGER (A PRIVATE PILOT) ALSO SAW THE FLASH OF GREEN, AND SHOUTED TO PULL UP. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ DECLARED A MISSED APPROACH, AND ASKED FOR AN ALTERNATE AIRPORT FOR LANDING. OREGON DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL CALLED SALEM TOWER AND REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT HAD HIT A TREE IN THEIR PARKING LOT, AND REPORTED HAVING AIRCRAFT PARTS IN THEIR POSSESSION. THIS AIRCRAFT DROPPED ABOUT 650 FEET BELOW THE GLIDE PATH 2.2 MILES FROM THE THRESHOLD OF THE RUNWAY, AND STRUCK A TREE AT ABOUT 350 FEET MSL. 100 FEET BEYOND THE TREE IS A 3 STORY BRICK PRISON BUILDING THE SAME HEIGHT AS THE TREE, AND AIRCRAFT MISSED THE BUILDING BY ONLY A FEW FEET. MINIMUM DESCENT ALTITUDE AT THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD FOR THE APPROACH IS 414 FEET.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
