## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT WAS AT CRUISE ALTITUDE OF 2500' AND REPORTED A LOSS OF POWER. THE ENGINE STARTED RUNNING ROUGH AND EXHIBITED A SEVERE VIBRATION. PILOT SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND SET UP FOR BEST GLIDE TO A DIRT FIELD. ON LANDING, AIRCRAFT STRUCK A FENCE POST AND SHEARED THE NOSE GEAR OFF, COMING TO REST IN A VERTICAL POSITION ON THE NOSE. DURING INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE AT THE SCENE, NOTED 6 QUARTS OF OIL REGISTERED ON THE DIPSTICK, AND THE CRANKSHAFT ROTATED FREELY. FOUND SIGNIFICANT METAL CONTAMINATION IN THE ROCKER COVERS OF #2 AND #4 CYLINDERS, AND THE LOWER SPARK PLUGS FOR THOSE CYLINDERS WERE FULL OF OIL. CONFIRMATION OF CAUSE FOR THE ENGINE FAILURE IS PENDING ENGINE TEARDOWN INSPECTION.
