## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT N9272C LANDED AT GREENE COUNTY AIRPORT EXPERIENCING AN UNCONTROLLABLE SHIMMY OF THE AIRCRAFT TAIL WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THIS CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO EXIT THE RUNWAY INTO A DITCH AND UP ON A TAXIWAY CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO LEFT WING AND GEAR. PILOT STATED HE KNEW OF A SHIMMY PROBLEM BUT COULD CONTROL IT IN THE PAST. TAIL WHEEL LOCKING MECHANISM WAS FOUND UNAIRWORTHY AND WORN OUT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI08CA295](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI08CA295), Sep 28, 2008: North American Harvard MK (N9272C), Dayton, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: Improper maintenance on the tail wheel anti-shimmy mechanism and the pilot's decision to continue operating the airplane with a known shimmy in the tail wheel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
