## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 10/02/2008 AT APPROXIMATELY 18:30 PDT A PIPER J3C-65 AIRCRAFT, SERIAL NUMBER 20931, OPERATED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ LOST CONTROL MOMENTARILY AFTER LANDING AND STRUCK A RESIDENTIAL HANGAR AT THE LYNDEN AIRPORT (38W) LOCATED IN LYNDEN, WASHINGTON. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO A HANGAR BEFORE INSPECTORS ARRIVED ON SCENE. THE PILOT RECEIVED NO INJURIES AND THE PASSENGER RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. DURING THE INTERVIEW THE PILOT STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS LANDING NORMALLY ON THE RUNWAY WHEN IT VEERED QUICKLY TO THE RIGHT OFF THE RUNWAY AND INTO THE RESIDENTIAL HANGAR. THE PILOT STATED HE NOTICED THE LEFT TAIL WHEEL SPRING WAS NOT ATTACHED WHEN THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO THE HANGAR. INSPECTORS FROM THIS OFFICE TRAVELED TO THE LYNDEN AIRPORT AND INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND DETERMINED THAT THE TAIL WHEEL WAS A CASTER WHEEL ASSEMBLY AND ALSO NOTED THAT THE CHAIN ATTACH CLIP WAS MISSING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TAIL WHEEL BELL CRANK.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09CA002](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09CA002), Oct 3, 2008: Piper J3C-65 (N2146M), Lynden, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The separation of the tailwheel spring retaining clip for unknown reasons, which resulted in the loss of directional control during the landing roll.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
