## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THIS WAS AN EVENING PLEASURE FLIGHT AT SUNSET. THE 1300 FOOT LONG GRASS RUNWAY THAT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ CHOSE TO LAND ON WAS ORIENTED ON A HEADING OF ABOUT 250 DEGREES WHICH WOULD HAVE THE SUN ALMOST ON THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT WHEN LANDING. IN THIS CONDITION, HE MISJUDGED THE HEIGHT OF THE AIRPLANE ABOVE THE GROUND AND FLEW INTO A DIRT BANK ABOUT 30 FEET SHORT OF THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE IMPACT RIPPED THE LANDING GEAR FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND A FUEL LEAK CAUSED IT TO CATCH ON FIRE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY THE FIRE. A RE-EXAMINATION OF HIS PILOTING SKILLS IN THE LANDING PHASE IS PLANNED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA004](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA004), Oct 8, 2008: Cessna 182P (N21544), Mount Vernon, MO, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot failed to maintain a proper landing aim point. Contributing to the accident were the setting sun and the uneven terrain approaching the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
