## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AN INSTRUCTOR AND HIS STUDENT IN A PIPER PA-28R ARROW DEPARTED THEIR PARKING AREA TO TAXI TO FOR RUN-UP PRIOR TO FLIGHT AND STRUCK A PARKED AIRCRAFT. THE INSTRUCTOR WAS DISTRACTED BY LOOKING SKYWARD TOWARDS SOME WEATHER THAT HE BELIEVED WOULD BE A FACTOR IN THEIR DEPARTURE PLANS AND HE THEN POINTED THIS WEATHER OUT OT THE STUDENT, WHO WAS ACTUALLY TAXIING THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE MOVING AS BOTH PILOTS WERE LOOKING UP. TOO LATE, THE INSTRUCTOR REALIZED THAT THE RIGHT WINGTIP OF THE ARROW WAS NOT GOING TO CLEAR THE LEFT WINGTIP OF THE PARKED AIRCRAFT AND MADE A FRANTIC EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND STOP BUT THE DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE ARROW WAS SHUTDOWN AND BOTH PILOTS EXITED THE AIRCRAFT. DAMAGE CONSISTED OF TWO CRUSHED WING RIBS AND TORN WING SKIN ON THE ARROW AND A SMALL CHUNK OF COMPOSITE WING MATERIAL TORN OFF THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE WINGTIP OF THE PARKED AIRCRAFT, A LANCAIR COLUMBIA 400.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
