## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT WAS VFR ENROUTE TO SALINA KANSAS, PRACTICING AN INSTRUMENT APPROACH. WHEN PREPARING TO LAND, THE PILOT SWITCHED FUEL TANKS AND FAILED TO MOVE THE SELECTOR VALVE TO THE CORRECT POSITION. THE PILOT CLAIMS TO HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED BY A RADIO CALL AND FAILED TO ENSURE THE FUEL SELECTOR VALVE WAS IN DESIRED POSITION. THE ENGINE THEN QUIT DUE TO FUEL STARVATION AND THE PILOT MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON KANSAS INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 135 AT MILE MARKER 94. THE LANDING WAS FIRM AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS STILL IN A CRAB WHEN IT LANDED. THE NOSE GEAR AND THE RIGHT MAIN COLLAPSED DURING THE LANDING CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA038](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA038), Oct 18, 2008: Beech A36 (N3112Y), Salina, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to properly manage the available fuel supply, which resulted in fuel starvation and subsequent loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
