## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT DEPARTED LEXINGTON, OR ENROUTE TO ESTACADA, OR (5S9). PILOT CALLED THE ESTACADA AIRPORT MANAGER ON CELL PHONE AND ASKED HIM TO TURN THE RUNWAY LIGHTS ON. THE ESTACADA AIRPORT MANAGER COMPLIED AND THE PILOT CALLED BACK AND SPOKE TO THE AIRPORT MANAGER'S WIFE AND ASKED IF SHE COULD HEAR THE AIRPLANE. SHE REPLIED NO BUT SHE WOULD LISTEN. BOTH THE AIRPORT MANAGER AND HIS WIFE WENT OUTSIDE AND HEARD THE AIRPLANE FLY OVER THE MIDDLE OF THE RUNWAY FOR AN APPROXIMATE CROSSWIND TO DOWNWIND. THEN THEY HEARD THE CRASH AND CALLED 911. WHEN THE PILOT SPOKE TO THE AIRPORT MANAGER THE FIRST TIME HE STATED HE HAD A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND THAT HE DID NOT THINK HIS FLAPS WOULD WORK. THE PILOT ALSO STATED HE THOUGHT HE SMELLED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE TREES ABOUT 1/3 MILE SOUTH OF THE AIRPORT ON THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE OF RUNWAY 34. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED WITH 2 FATALITIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from trees while on approach to land at night. Contributing to the accident was the electrical system failure and the pilot's diverted attention.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
