WHILES ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS PERFORMING A 180 DEGREE AUTO-ROTATION, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ NOTICED THAT THE ROTOR RPM WAS LOW DURING THE FLARE AND IMMEDIATELY GOT ON THE CONTROLS BUT WAS UNABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE MAIN ROTOR BLADE CONTACTED THE TAILBOOM AND SEVERED IT FROM THE AIRCRAFT. ## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA067](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA067), Nov 19, 2008: Robinson Helicopter R22 Beta II (N221DS), Erie, CO, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's improper flare during the practice autorotation which resulted in a hard landing. Contributing factors were the flight instructor's delayed remedial action and inadequate supervision.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
