## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

STUDENT PILOT AND CFI WERE CONDUCTING NIGHT TRAINING. THEY DEPARTED HPN FOR X-C TO GON. THEY REMAINED IN THE PATTERN, HAD COMPLETED 2 LANDINGS, WERE CLEARED FOR THE THIRD. ON SHORT FINAL, BOTH PILOTS STATED THAT THEY WERE ALIGNED WITH THE RUNWAY, COFIGURED FOR LANDING, IMPACTED THE TREES. CFI STATED THAT HE LOOKED DOWN TO MONITOR THE AIRSPEED, LOOKED UP TO SEE THE TREES ON IMPACT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA09LA064](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA09LA064), Nov 19, 2008: Cessna 172S (N2337F), Groton, CT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain a proper descent profile to avoid trees during the night visual approach and the flight instructor’s inadequate oversight.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
