## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT INDICATED THAT HE TOOK OFF AT ABOUT 15:00 WITH ONE PASSENGER. WINDS WERE AT ABOUT 90 DEGREE CROSS WIND. THE HELICOPTER CLIMBED TO 40'. THE AIRCRAFT 'SETTLED', AND HE MADE A LANDING INTO AN ADJACENT EMPTY LOT. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN, SLID FORWARD, AND ROLLED ON IT'S LEFT SIDE. A REVIEW OF THE SCENE AND STATEMENTS FROM WITNESSED INDICATE THAT THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT ACHIEVE MORE THAN 15-20 FT OF ALTITUDE. THE AIRCRAFT LOST LIFT, AND CAME DOWN IN THE EMPTY LOT. ON THE WAY DOWN THE AIRCRAFT'S BLADES IMPACTED A TREE, BUT NO PARTS CAME OFF AT THAT POINT. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED ONCE AND SLID INTO THE FIRE HYDRANT. THE FIRE HYDRANT TOOK OUT ONE SIDE OF THE SKID GEAR, NOSING THE AIRCRAFT OVER. AT THIS POINT THE M/R BLADES IMPACTED THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED ON IT'S SIDE. THE TAILBOOM REMAINED LODGED ON THE FIRE HYDRANT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA068](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA068), Nov 20, 2008: Brantly B-2B (N2180U), Cedar Hill, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper decision to takeoff downwind. A contributing factor was the gusty conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
