## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHILE APPROACH TO WINTER HEAVEN AIRPORT (GIF) AT APPROXIMATLELY 5-7 MILES NORTH OF THE AIRPORT, BONANZA N4396W, PILOTED BY ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, WAS DESCENDING THROUGH 2000 FEET WHEN THE PILOT OBSERVED ONCOMING TRAFFIC AT HIS SAME ALTITUDE. PILOT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ MADE AN EVASIVE MANEUVER TO THE LEFT BUT NEVERTHELESS COLLIDED WITH PIPER WARRIOR N121DL. BOTH AIRPLANES SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGES. THERE WAS NO INJURIES TO THE PILOTS OR PASSENGERS. BOTH AIRPLANES LANDED SAFELY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA09LA067](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA09LA067), Nov 23, 2008: Beech V35 (N4396W), Winter Haven, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: Both pilots’ failure to see and avoid the other airplane. Contributing to the accident was the Beech pilot’s failure to monitor or utilize the common traffic advisory frequency.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
