## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE SUBJECT AIRCRAFT WAS ON A VFR FLIGHT FROM (CZG) ENDICOTT, NY, TO (N94) CARLISLE, PA. DURING CRUISE AT 1000 FEET AGL, 20 MILES WEST OF (N94) THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN SIGNIFICANT POWER LOSS. CHANGING MAGNETOS AND ADDING CARB HEAT DID NOT IMPROVE PERFORMANCE. AN EMERGENCY LANDING WAS ATTEMPTED ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE DUE TO TERRAIN. DURING THE LANDING FLARE THE AIRCRAFT CONTACTED THE REAR OF A TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK AND TOUCHED DOWN HARD, COMING TO REST ON THE GUARD RAIL. THE EXPERIENCED PILOT WAS AWARE OF THE LOW TEMPERATURE (37F) AND HIGH HUMIDITY (66-72%) PRESENT, AND WAS ALERT OF POSSIBLE ICING CONDITIONS. A POST ACCIDENT ENGINE INSPECTION REVEALED NORMAL ENGINE OPERATION. A FAA SAFETY RECOMMENDATION IS BEING FILED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA09LA098](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA09LA098), Dec 18, 2008: Hess John L Spezio II (N66JH), Newville, PA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to carburetor ice as a result of the pilot's delayed use of carburetor heat.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
