## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING THE FINAL PATTERN OF A TRAINING FLIGHT THE SECOND PILOT IN THE RIGHT SEAT (INSTRUCTOR) INITIATED A SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE ON DOWNWIND. DURING THE MANEUVERING TO FINAL THE PILOT ENTERED A STEEPER THAN NORMAL TURN RESULTED IN A HIGHER THAN EXPECTED DESCENT RATE. THE MANEUVER WAS ABORTED WITH APPLICATION OF POWER BY BOTH PILOTS BUT TOO LATE TO RECOVER. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED A PLOWED FIELD SKIDDED ACROSS A TWO LANE PAVED ROAD AND CAME TO REST ON THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE CABIN BELOW THE SEATS CRUSHED, ABSORBING MUCH OF THE IMPACT ENERGY. THE SECOND PILOT RECEIVED FACIAL LACERATIONS AND A MINOR BACK INJURY. THE PILOT RECEIVED LACERATION ON THE LEFT HAND AND INTERNAL INJURY REQUIRING SURGERY AND 6 DAYS OF HOSPITALIZATION. INITIAL DRAFT COPY E-MAILED TO NTSB IIC ON 3/24/2009.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA228](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA228), Mar 22, 2009: Remos Remos GX (N446RA), St. Charles, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain a proper glide path and airspeed during a simulated emergency approach. Contributing to the accident was the flight instructor's delayed remedial action.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
