## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATED HE DEPARTED RWY 23 WHEN HE ENCOUNTED A DUST DEVIL SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF AND FROM WHICH HE RECOVERED BUT LOST ALTITUDE. FURTHER INTO THE TAKEOFF/DEPARTURE PHASE HE ENCOUNTERED AIR TURBULENCE WHICH CAUSED A CONTINUED LOSS IN ALTITUDE UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND. UPON IMPACT, THE GEAR SHEARED OFF, FUEL BEGAN LEAKING, AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON ITS BACK. A SURVEY OF THE CRASH SITE SUPPORTS THE PILOT'S RECOLLECTION OF EVENTS. BOTH OCCUPANTS WERE ABLE TO EXTRICATE THEMSELVES FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THIS IS A HOMEBUILT AIRCRAFT WHICH HAD PRIOR DAMAGE. THE PILOT STATED HE DECIDED TO REMOVED THE CANOPY BEFORE BEGINNING HIS TRIP AND THE CANOPY WAS NOT INSTALLED AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. THIS SEEMS TO HAVE MADE IT EASIER FOR THE OCCUPANTS TO CRAWL OUT FROM UNDER THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09CA231](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09CA231), May 8, 2009: Fuhrmann-Super Emeraude Stretched (N11LF), Peach Springs, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The airplane's encounter with turbulence after takeoff, which resulted in an uncontrolled descent and collision with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
