## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT AND PASSENGER (ALSO A PILOT: COMMERICAL, INSTRUMENT, CFI) DEPARTED RAMONA AIRPORT, CA (KRNM) AT APPROXIMATELY 1400 PDT FOR A LOCAL PLEASURE FLIGHT. THE PLANE WAS OBSERVED BY SEVERAL WITNESSES NEAR THE CRASH SITE,MANEUVERING AT ESTIMATED ALTITUDES OF 1000 TO 2000 FT. AGL, FOR TEN TO FIFTEEN MINUTES BEFORE THE CRASH. ONE WITNESS (NON PILOT BUT WITH SOME AVIATION KNOWLEDGE) SAID HE OBSERVED THE PLANE PERFORM A FEW NINTY-DEGREE BANKED TURNS OF 180 TO 270 DEGREES CHANGE IN DIRECTION. NONE OF THE WITNESSES INTERVIEWED, WHEN ASKED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT AEROBATIC MANEUVERS, SAID THEY OBSERVED ANY ROLLS OR LOOPS; OR ANYTHING MORE UNCONVENTIONAL THAN THE NINETY-DEGREE BANKED TURNS. WEATHER AT THE CRASH SITE WAS VMC WITH LIGHT BUT SLIGHTLY GUSTY WINDS. ALL WITNESSES INTERVIEWED DESCRIBED FAILURE OF THE AIRCRAFT WING IN FLIGHT, PRIOR TO IMPACT WITH THE GROUND. NO WITNESS ACTUALLY SAW THE WING FAIL. ALL SAID THEY SAW THE WING FOLDED BACK, STILL ATTACHED TO THE PLANE, AS IT SPUN VERTICALLY TO THE GROUND. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES INDICATES PROBABLE STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THE AIRCRAFT WING PRIOR TO THE CRASH. THIS REPORT AMENDED 05/26/2009 FROM ORIGINAL REPORT NUMBER:WP09LA234. (TAP - WP09)

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09FA234](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09FA234), May 9, 2009: Upton Bakeng Duce (N86YP), Ramona, CA, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: An in-flight separation of the right wing, which resulted from the pilot's performance of a maneuver that produced aerodynamic loads that exceeded the wing spar’s degraded strength. The wing spar…
