## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT N797PS A MAULE 6-235 DEPARTED PINE RIVER ON 05-13-09 ON AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN BOUND FOR WHEELER'S POINT ON THE RAINY RIVER JUST NORTH OF BAUDETTE, MN. WEATHER INFORMATION FROM PRINCETON FSS INDICATED THE PRESENCE OF INTERMITTENT STRONG GUSTY WINDS IN THE AREA AT APPROXIMATELY 220 DEGREES. AIRCRAFT MADE ITS APPROACH AND LANDED INTO THE WIND ON THE RAINY RIVER ON A HEADING OF APPROXIMATELY 220 DEGREES. AIRCRAFT REDUCED POWER AND BEGAN TO TAXI TOWARDS LANDING POINT ON SHORE. AIRCRAFT MADE A LEFT TURN AND WAS STRUCK BY A STRONG GUST OF WIND LIFTING THE RIGHT WING UP AND ROLLING THE AIRCRAFT OVER AND SUBMERGING IT THE RIVER ABOUT 8 FEET OF WATER. PILOT ESCAPED AIRCRAFT WITHOUT BEING INJURED. AIRCRAFT REMAINED SUBMERGED UNTIL 11:00 ON 05-15-2009 WHEN ITS PULLED FROM THE RIVER BY A LARGE BACKHOE. DURING RECOVERY THE RIGHT WING STRUTS COLLAPSED CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRFRAME. BOTH WINGS LEADING EDGES REFLECTED DAMAGE CONSISTENT WITH CONTACT WITH THE RIVER BOTTOM. THERE WAS NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DUE INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE WATER OR BEING ROLLED OVER BY THE WIND GUST. END.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
