## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT AND OWNER OF A TRI-PACER PA-22/20 WAS ON A PLEASURE FLIGHT FROM MERRILL FIELD TO TALKEETNA WITH HIS WIFE, MOTHER AND DAUGHTER. UPON LANDING AT TALKEETNA, TKA, THE TAIL WHEEL HAD A BAD SHIMMY. THE PILOT PUSHED FORWARD ON THE CONTROL YOKE TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF OF THE TAIL. A GROUND LOOP FOLLOWED, COLLAPSING THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR AND DAMAGING THE RIGHT WING TIP.ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, HE HAD FLOWN HIS TRI-PACER PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT ON THE 14TH AND HAD EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT TAIL SHIMMY. HE CONDUCTED A POST FLIGHT AND NOTICED THAT THE TAIL WHEEL ASSEMBLY LOOKED NORMAL.ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, ON THE PLEASURE FLIGHT TO TKA THE WEATHER WAS VFR AND THE WINDS WERE LIGHT. THE LANDING AT TALKEETNA WAS GOOD AND THE AIRSPEED WAS NORMAL. HE LANDED JUST BEYOND THE NUMBERS ON THE RUNWAY. ON ROLL OUT HE EXPERIENCED AN ADVANCED TAIL WHEEL SHIMMY THAT WAS SO BAD THAT IT CAUSED THE RUDDER PEDDLES TO SLAM BACK AND FORTH, CREATING A RESONANCE. HE DID NOT USE THE BRAKES AND ROLLED FOR ABOUT 400 TO 500 FEET. HE DECIDED TO LIGHTEN THE WEIGHT ON THE TAIL WHEEL AND PUSHED FORWARD ON THE CONTROL YOKE, AND THAT IS WHEN THE GROUND LOOP BEGAN.IN MY OPINION: ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC09CA043](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC09CA043), May 15, 2009: Piper PA-22-150 (N1999P), Talkeetna, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll, resulting in a ground loop and substantial damage to the airplane.

## Other reports on N1999P (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19920908036559A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920908036559A), Sep 8, 1992: Piper PA22108 (N1999P), Dillingham, AK, Substantial damage. Over rotated on takeoff. Dragged rear of floats. Pushed nose down tried again. Lifted at shore and flew into trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
