## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 6, 2009, AT 1535 EDT, A DEHAVILLAND VAMPIRE, N6878D, REGISTERED TO WINGS OF FLIGHT, INC., RETURNED TO THE ROCHESTER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KROC) WHEN AT ABOUT 3500 FEET MSL, THE PILOT HEARD A LOUD NOISE FOLLOWED BY AN ENGINE VIBRATION, ENGINE POWER LOSS AND SHUTDOWN. THE PILOT MADE AN APPROACH TO RUNWAY 4 BUT HIT SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AND LOST CONTROL CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME, AND A VFR FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED, AND THE CERTIFICATED PILOT WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA09LA324](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA09LA324), Jun 6, 2009: De Havilland Vampire MK-3 (N6878D), Rochester, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to oil starvation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
