## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS OBSERVED TO ENTER THERMAL AND THEN ENTER A STALL, FOLLOWED BY A SPIN, WHICH THEN PROGRESSED TO A STEEP, SPIRAL DIVE. AFTER BUT A COUPLE OF ROTATIONS THE WINGS SEPARATED FROM THE FUSELAGE, RESULTING IN A FATAL ACCIDENT. TO THOSE OBSERVING IT APPEARED AS IF THERE WAS NO ATTEMPT TO RECOVER FROM THE SPIN, NOR ANY ATTEMPT BY THE PILOT TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT (PARACHUTE) DURING ANY PART OF THE MANEUVER. FUSELAGE DISINGRATED ON IMPACT-REMAINING AIRCRAFT DEBRIS SPREAD OVER A WIDE AREA.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR09LA318](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR09LA318), Jun 29, 2009: Alexander Schleicher ASW 27-18E (N129TD), Ephrata, WA, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the glider during flight and his exceedance of the glider’s design limits during an attempted recovery from a spin.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
