## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 7/11/2009 @ 1655Z, AN EMBRAER 145LR AIRCRAFT DEPARTED CVG TO PHL. ON THE CLIMB-OUT AT FL 210, THE PILOT REPORTED A POSSIBLE LIGHTNING STRIKE AND REQUESTED A PRIORITY RETURN TO CVG. THE PILOT'S WINDSHIELD HAD BEEN CRACKED (SPIDERWEBBED), AND THE CREW DID SMELL AN ODOR ON THE FLIGHTDECK, AND THEN THE PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED BACK AT CVG WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE PILOT REPORTED THE ODOR HAD DISSIPATED VERY QUICKLY AFTER THE CREW NOTICED IT AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AT CVG DID NOT NOTICE ANY FUMES, ODOR'S, OR SMOKE IN THE AIRCRAFT. THE MECHANICS AT CVG REPLACED THE PILOT'S WINDSHIELD AND IT HAD A SHORTED TEMP SENSOR LEAD. THE MECHANICS INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT SHOWED NO SIGNS OF A LIGHTNING STRIKE OR ANY OTHER DEFECT. THE AIR CARRIER WILL BE SENDING THEIR CHDO A SERVICE DIFFICULTY REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
