## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT AND SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRCCRAFT TOOK OFF ON A LOCAL VFR FLIGHT FROM RUNWAY 26 AT GARDNER MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (K34) IN GARDNER, KANSAS. ON HIS INITIAL TAKEOFF AND CLIMB, AT APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET AGL, THE ENGINE LOST POWER. HE ATTEMPTED TO TURN AND LAND ON RUNWAY 17 (TURF), BUT LANDED IN A HAY FIELD ADJACENT TO THE RUNWAY, STRIKING A ROW OF ROUND HAY BALES. AT TOUCHDOWN THE MAIN GEAR COLLAPSED AND THE AIRCRAFT SLID TO A STOP IMMEDIATELY WEST OF RUNWAY 17.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA473](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA473), Jul 21, 2009: Stinson 108 (N192C), Gardner, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to ensure that the fuel selector valve was set properly in its detent prior to takeoff, resulting in fuel starvation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
