## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ONE OF THE GROUND CREW WAS WASHING DOWN THE AIRPLANE WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, WITH THE PILOT IN THE AIRPLANE AND AT THE CONTROLS, WHEN HE BACKED INTO THE PROPELLER ARC AND WAS STRUCK THREE TIMES BY THE PROPELLER BLADES. HE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED AND WAS AIRLIFTED TO SPRINGFIELD, MO, BY HELICOPTER. HE IS EXPECTED TO LIVE BUT WILL HAVE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO HIS LEFT ARM AND SHOULDER. THE AIRCRAFT HAD MADE ITS LAST FLIGHT OF THE DAY AND THE PILOT WAS LETTING THE ENGINE IDLE FOR A FEW MINUTES, FOR COOLING PURPOSES AS INSTRUCTED BY THE OPERATOR, WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE GROUND CREW HAD BEEN TRAINED TO STAY BEHIND THE WING WHEN WORKING AROUND A RUNNING AIRCRAFT, THIS WORKER EMERGED FROM UNDER THE WING AND BACKED INTO THE PROPELLER ARC.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN09CA469](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN09CA469), Jul 23, 2009: Piper PA-25-235 (N6689Z), Miller, MO, no damage. Probable cause: The failure of the operator to shut down aircraft while conducting servicing which resulted in a ground person being struck by the rotating aircraft propeller.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
